ADULT STRABISMUS
We Can Help!

Strabismus is a fancy word for eye misalignment. Normally, our eyes are meant to be pointed in the correct directions to work together to achieve good binocular vision and depth perception. When various issues interfere with that, the eyes are no longer working together, often resulting in double vision (diplopia), or a cosmetically unacceptable eye alignment. Medical issues such as strokes, thyroid eye disease, Lymes Disease, or residual misalignment from childhood can cause adult eyes to be out of alignment. Additionally, pediatric strabismus and/or amblyopia are “lifetime and lifelong” problems that can often evolve into a recurrence of ocular misalignment in adulthood. Most, though not all, adult ocular misalignments can be improved (though not always perfectly) surgically.

Often surgery is required. Surgery is done on an outpatient basis and usually requires general anesthsia, as the eyes are very sensitive. Strabismus surgery involves loosening, tightening, or repositioning the muscles to align the eyes. Your eye doctor can recommend treatment options.
